Digital Citizenship Education events in Ireland – DiCE Interactive Workshops!

Digital Citizenship Education events in Ireland - DiCE Interactive Workshops!

DiCE Interactive Workshops by Eurospeak

During March and April 2025, Eurospeak focused on promoting the educational platform of the “Digital Citizenship Education” – DiCE project (project’s number: 2022-1-FR01-KA220-ADU-000088511) to 32 teachers, trainers, educators and students in Ireland. For this reason, Eurospeak organised three Interactive Workshops on Digital Citizenship Education in collaboration with the Dublin City University (DCU) and the New Communities Partnership (NCP) in Dublin.

Participants were asked to fill in one evaluation questionnaire before the workshop and another one after the workshop was held. It is interesting to compare and contrast the answers provided by the participants to these questionnaires. To start with, before the workshop, participants had a vague idea of what “Digital Citizenship Education” is. 7,1% weren’t familiar at all with the concept of Digital Citizenship Education, and only 14,3% knew exactly what that concept is about. Half of them (50%) had that concept mixed up in their minds, whereas 21,4% knew very little about it, and 7,1% were quite familiar with it. Before the workshops, most of them found it difficult to answer what comes to mind when they hear about “Digital Citizenship Education”.  Here are some characteristic answers:

-” Nothing.”

– ”I can’t imagine.”

– “ I haven’t heard of that term before the workshop.”

– “Can you help me answer that question?”

On the other hand, there were some participants who had a clue about it:

  • It’s education about digital citizenship.”
  • I think this is necessary in modern society.”
  • It has to do with online education.”

Only participants provided more detailed answers:

  • It has to do with responsible and ethical use of digital tools for learning, including online safety, privacy, and collaboration in educational environments.”
  • Modern skills, online responsibility and equal access to knowledge.”

That changed after attending the DiCE Interactive Workshop, because 40% replied that they were very familiar with the concept of “Digital Citizenship Education” after the workshop was completed, and 60% knew exactly what that concept is about. The majority found that the DiCE Interactive Workshops was a good and useful idea that added new skills to them. Others found it important for people who usually live in a virtual world, especially for young people and for storing personal data. Another one stated that “it is necessary to know and check your rights”, while someone commented that “it is a responsibility and needs to be ethical and safe. One participant admitted that: “I have learnt a lot of information which I didn’t know before this workshop” and another one stated: “Now, I know about the DiCE website on Digital Citizenship Education and its platform, that consists of many lessons and assessments about digital education”. One more also mentioned that the DiCE educational platform was good, where another participant was in a position to provide a very elaborated answer after the workshop stating that: “Digital citizen is a person who is able to competently and positively engage with evolving digital technologies; participates actively, continuously and responsibly in social and civic activities; is involved in a process of lifelong learning (in formal, informal and non-formal settings)”. But there was also one participant who admitted that even after attending the workshop he/she was not ready yet to answer definitively what Digital Citizenship Education is.

The link to the DiCE educational platform was shared to the participants some days before attending the workshop. However, only half of them found the time to explore it a bit. The other half didn’t manage to check the DiCE platform before the workshop. Those who had the time to check it before the workshop found it at 42,9% of some interest, at 7,1% of little interest, at 14,3% of high interest and at 35,7% of great interest!

Upon the completion of the DiCE Interactive Workshop, the answers to the questions: “Did you find the DiCE platform interesting and useful? Do you plan to use it for your personal growth or your work?” varied a lot as seen in the graph below:

Concluding, participants did learn something new about online education through the DiCE Interactive Workshops, and that is depicted in the answers they provided regarding what is their best take-away from the workshop they attended. We chose some of them to be listed below:

  • Digital citizenship is crucial for people to have and to recognise the potential effects of media to avoid misguidance and build their perspective.”
  • How digital media is controlling our view of reality.”
  • I added the DiCE website and the DiCE platform to my notes so that it would always be at hand and I could quickly use it when needed.”
  • It is important to keep your data safe and secure.”
  • Lesson 3 of the DiCE Platform.”
  • That digital data protection is interesting.”

DiCE National Info Day in Ireland

Similar was the atmosphere in terms of interest during the DiCE National Info Day that was organised by Eurospeak in Dublin on the 14th of April 2025. The DiCE project, its partnership, its objectives and its deliverables with a special focus on the DiCE Training Toolkit were presented to participants in detail. Attendees also had the chance to get to know about the most important events and news about the DiCE project, and especially about the International Conference of the DiCE project that took place in France on the 3rd of April 2025.
