The DEMOCRACY TREE Project: A Journey Completed, A Legacy Begins

We are proud to announce the successful finalisation of the DEMOCRACY TREE project — a unique educational initiative that has sought to bring democratic values to life for young people across Europe.

Why DEMOCRACY TREE?

From its inception, DEMOCRACY TREE aimed to educate youth about democratic values, tracing the historical roots of democracy and connecting them to the foundational values of the European Union. The journey is visualised in the metaphor of a tree: from deep roots (the origins of democracy) through branches (historical development) to leaves (modern values and principles). Key objectives included:

  • Providing youth workers and young people with educational tools and platforms about democracy and its European dimension.
  • Promoting non-discrimination and inclusivity, strengthening the sense of European citizenship among diverse backgrounds.
  • Using innovative online and non-formal education methods to make learning about democracy engaging and interactive.

What Has Been Achieved

Over the course of the project, the consortium realised a series of tangible outputs and results:

  1. History of Democracy research & materials
A comprehensive collection of case studies, stories, and historical accounts tracing democracy’s evolution across Europe.
  2. Democracy Tree App
The mobile application brings the metaphorical tree to life — users can explore different “branches” of democratic ideas, values, and historical turning points. It also includes interactive modules, quizzes, and educational content.
  3. User Manual / Toolkit for youth workers
A guide supporting educators and facilitators to use the app and related resources in non-formal learning settings.
  4. Research on racism and xenophobia
Investigation and documentation of experiences among youth, as well as strategies and pedagogical approaches to address these challenges in democratic education.

These outputs are now publicly available via the project’s infrastructure.
