Digitalization in the world of handicrafts

The field of handicrafts has benefited greatly from the developments and opportunities provided by digitalization. Here are a few examples of how digitalization has affected and influenced the handcraft sector:

  • Digital Design and Customization: With the use of digital tools and software, craftspeople may now digitally generate elaborate designs, patterns, and templates. These patterns can subsequently be used in a variety of handcraft processes, including ceramics, wood carving, and embroidery, enabling more precision and customisation. The opportunities for artists to produce one-of-a-kind, customized crafts have increased because to computer-aided design (CAD) software, laser cutters, and 3D printers.
  • Online Communities and Collaboration: The expansion of online communities and forums has been facilitated by digitalization, allowing artisans to connect, exchange knowledge, and work together. Platforms and forums specifically dedicated to crafts enable artists to consult subject matter experts, exchange ideas, and acquire new skills. This sense of belonging and cooperation promotes creativity and the sharing of knowledge and skills.
  • Online learning and skill development: There are many resources available for artists to improve their abilities and learn new skills on online platforms and websites. Craftspeople have access to a broad variety of educational resources, from YouTube video lessons to specialized craft courses on websites like Skillshare and Udemy. Due to the democratization of learning brought about by digitalization, craftsmen can now learn new skills at their own pace and convenience.
  • Supply Chain Management: The management of the supply chain for handicrafts has been improved by digital tools. Through digital platforms, artisans can now obtain raw materials, keep track of inventories, and manage orders more effectively. Additionally, online marketplaces include integrated logistics services that make it simpler for craftsmen to manage shipping and delivery procedures.
  • Craft fairs and exhibitions online: Digital platforms have made it easier to host craft fairs and exhibitions online. Since there are no geographical restrictions, artists can engage in virtual events and exhibit their work in online galleries, reaching a larger audience. Artists can network with customers, possible partners, and professionals in the business through virtual events.

Entering a new era in arts & crafts, EDICRA Erasmus+ project looks forward to develop a methodology and training program for the incorporation of young people into the world of crafts by including digitization and immersion in rural areas as learning vehicles.
